My Heart Smiled

I awoke
to wireless reports of mayhem and anxieties.
I traveled to work
in a congestion of noisy traffic jams,
clattering cattle cars,
and immobile subterranean shuttles.
I raced the clock
to meet deadlines and commitments.
I was belittled, besmirched, and nearly beheaded
by bottom line boasting bosses.
I labored through daylight
and slumped beneath stars.

I ventured homeward
haggard and weary,
tired and trodden,
yet through it all my heart smiled,
thinking of you.
